Why do people read female magazines?
I was discussing with some gal pals in college yesterday and we couldn't come to a conclusion. Personally, I feel that by reading these magazines, it gives me an added sense of feminity. Yet, at the same time, I can't help but feel so low, in comparison to the millions of gorgeous-looking women out there. It's a 'paradoxical contradiction', I tell you. Don't ask me why or how.
It's funny how they would include articles on how to boost your self-esteem and yet fill the rest of the magazine with pictures of women who are extremely good looking. So what is the ultimate message? You'll only really feel good about yourself IF you look like them?
"Some of the articles they have in there are actually quite good," opines one of my friends. They sometimes include informative and effective tips on improving social skills, tips for DIY projects, health advice, etc. But tell me, how many people actually buy the mag simply for general knowledge? In my opinion, people buy them because these mags are affordable eye candy. The worst part is the way they deliver information; their idea is to indicate that premarital sex is the norm. SIGH. Or at least, they're inculcating values in young people, saying that if you're not living in with your boyfriend, you're not doing relationships the right way.
Many times, after a long day at coll, all I want to do is just to sit in my living room, sip my usual dose of coffee and flip through some eye candy, as a treat to my poor eyes before the dreaded work on assignments begin. After a tiring day, sometimes the last thing you want to do is to flip through the newspaper as it's mostly filled with the sad realities of life and the wickedness of mankind. And you definitely wouldn't want to read through The Times magazine, unless of course you are the president of the US and you need to be updated on what's going on in the political and business world (including the many articles that often backbite you).
Somehow flipping through pages of scantily clad women, seems to be more relaxing than a proper good book. At least staring at those color-filled pages is more appealing than staring at the plain walls around you.
But have you ever wondered, why do people waste so much money on something that doesn't always benefit us in any way at all...but leaves you with less self-esteem than before?
And yet, we still continue reading the wretched stuff. We don't seem to want to stop.
There you go. One of the weirdest things that some of us females do. Even I don't understand that about myself. I speak for myself...

Its a loop thing i think. You have the good articles that help with self esteem, then they shoot it down with the pictures, so you have to buy the next issue for the articles to increase your self esteem again.
Marketing at its finest! =P

haha, i agree. but still, more than the self-esteem thing, i generally enjoy flipping thru those color-filled pages la. something abt bright colors that really cheer me up more than anything else. =)

Maybe coz we like to see what the world percieves as perfect or 'in'!... and see where we are on the worldly scale.. yea and they do have Great tips and articles! where else to find those info but in mags!.. btw who doesnt like looking at beautiful women! even us females sometimes look at our own sex more than we look at men hahaha

You know, the National Geographic is pretty colorful too, and more informative than any "feminine" magazines out there. You might want to try that instead.
